What is a hordeolum (stye)?
A
bacterial infection to one or more eyelid glands

What is the most common causative organism?
A
S. aureus

What are the contributing factors?
A
- underlying medical conditions – rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis
- other – makeup

What are the signs and symptoms?
A
- single painful lesion
- unilateral, localized redness, inflammation
- acute onset

What is an external hordeolum?
A
- involves glands of Moll and/or Zeis
- smaller

What is an internal hordeolum?
A
- involves meibomian glands
- larger
- more pronounced swelling

What is the general treatment?
A
non-pharm treatment to alleviate symptoms, reduce exacerbations, and help prevent recurrence
- external hordeolum: 2-3 days
- internal hordeolum: 1 week

When is referral required?
A
if hordeolum does not being to drain or resolve:
- external hordeolum: 2-3 days
- internal hordeolum: 1 week
