Q

Tempering

A

Improves hardness and toughness of steel as well as reducing the brittleness creating a stable structure of steel. Done by heating and cooling the metal.

Hardening

A

Makes the non-ferrous harder but more brittle. Done by heating and cooling it.

Q

Case hardening

A

To make the metal harder by increasing it’s carbon content on it’s exterior. This is done by heating it up and placing in case hardening powder whilst heating. The ferrous metal is then quenched after the carbonisation to set the metal.

Q

Annealing

A

The metal becomes softer, more workable and shapable at room temperature. This is done by bringing the metal close to it’s equilibrium state.

Q

Normalising

A

it removes the impurities and improves the metals strength and hardness. This is done by altering the grain size of the metal to be more uniform.
