Heat Treatment Flashcards
What is tempering?
A method which is used to decrease the hardness of steel and increase ductility and toughness
What is quenching?
A method where the steel is put in cold water straight after being heated to above its critical temperature
What’s the most effective way of quenching steel?
Brine
What does heating steel to above it’s critical temperature do allow?
Carbon to disperse uniformly in the iron matrix
What is annealing?
Softens and relieves any internal stresses
What temperature is steel heated to in the process of normalising?
100 degrees Fahrenheit above its upper critical limit
At what temperature do you cool the steel during normalising?
Room temperature
What are the different types of heat treatment?
- Annealing
- Tempering
- hardening
- Normalising
- Quenching
Why do you cool the steel at room temp during normalising?
To relieve stress
