Corrosion and stainless steels + heat treatment Flashcards
What does CRES mean?
Corrosion Resistant Stainless Steel
What are the 3 categories of stainless steel?
Austenitic
Ferritic
Martinstitic
What metals are austenitic made up of?
Chromium / nickel and chromium nickel manganese alloys
How much chrome is in Ferritic materials?
15 - 30%
What percentage of chromium do martenstitic materials contain?
12 - 18%
What does precipitation hardening do to steel?
Makes it harder and more resistant to temperature
What are ferrous and titanium alloys susceptible to?
Hydrogen embrittlement
How does stress concentration occur?
Misuse of tools
What is required for galvanic corrosion to occur?
Annode and Cathode
What is galvanic corrosion potential?
A measure is how dissimilar metals will corrode when placed against each other in an assembly
What are the 2 methods of case hardening?
Carburising and nitriding
Is case hardening used on ferrous or non-ferrous metals?
Ferrous
What are the 3 types of carburising?
Gas, pack and liquid
What temperatures are components heated to in pack carburising?
1700 degrees Celsius
How does liquid carburising work?
Object heated to a suitable temperature and then immersed in a hot, salt bath at 900 degrees C
