Heat Treatment Flashcards
1
Q
What is work hardening?
A
Occurs when a non-ferrous metal is cold bent. When bent, hit or shaped, it becomes hard and brittle
2
Q
What is annealing?
A
Remove the internal stresses within non-ferrous metals and make them workable
3
Q
What is normalising?
A
Undertaken in ferrous metals that have become hardened, returning them to unhardened state
4
Q
What is hardening?
A
Heated to red hot and then quenched in water, becoming hard but brittle
5
Q
What is tempering?
A
Removes the brittleness in the material and replaces it with toughness
