Conversion And Seasoning Flashcards
What is slab sawn conversion?
Timber is cut along the complete length of the log - Long planks
Generally used on softwoods
What is the advantage of slab sawn conversion?
Cheap way of converting timber
Little waste
What is the disadvantage of slab sawn conversion?
Planks are prone to warping or cupping
What is quarter sawn conversion?
Timber is cut so the annual rings are as short as possible
What are the advantages of quarter sawn conversion?
Higher quality timber
Reduced risk of wood twisting or cupping
What are the disadvantages of quarter sawn conversion?
More expensive method
More wastage
What is seasoning?
Removal of deceased moisture from timber after timbers have been converted
What is natural seasoning?
Timber is allowed to dry out at its own pace in air. Sticks are placed between planks to allow air to circulate
What is the advantage of natural seasoning?
Cheapest method
What are the disadvantages of natural seasoning?
Could be inconsistency in final product as uncontrolled
Time consuming; 5 years for wood to season
What is kiln seasoning?
Timber is dried out ‘artificially’ in a kiln. Steam is pumped into chamber. Killing bugs and forcing moisture from wood
What are the advantages of kiln seasoning?
Kills bacteria and microbes
Far quicker
Stable timber as moisture content is controlled
What is the disadvantage of kiln seasoning?
Far more expensive
