Heat Transfer Vocabulary Flashcards
Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed just transferred (under normal conditions)
Heat
Thermal Energy that flows due to a difference in temp. Heat flows from hot to cold
Heat transfer
A method by which heat flows
(conduction, convection, radiation).
Conduction
Heat transfer within or between solid objects.
(they are in contact)
Convection
Heat transfer into or out of fluids
(air or water)
Radiation
Heat transfer due to packets of energy called photons that can travel through many substances, even empty space. (this is how we get things from the sun)
Insulator
A material through which energy (electrical, thermal, or sound) cannot be easily transferred. ( An oven mitt)
Conductor
A material through which energy (electrical, thermal, or sound) can be easily transferred. (Anything metal)
Temperature
The measure of the average speed of all particles. (how fast it is moving, if temp is high there moving fast if temp is low they move slow.)
Thermal Energy
The total energy of all particles in an object.
