Heat transfer flashcards
Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy can not be created or destroyed (under normal conditions.)
Heat
Thermal energy that flows due to a difference in temperature from hot to cold
Heat transfer
A method by which heat flows (conduction, convection, radiation)
Conduction
Heat transfer within or between solid objects
Convection
Heat transfer into or out of fluids (can be air or water)
Radiation
Heat transfer due to packets of energy called photons that can travel through many substances, even empty space
Insulator
A material through which energy (electrical, thermal, or sound) cannot be easily transfered
Conductor
A material through which energy (electrical, thermal, or sound) can be easily transferred
Temperature
The measure of the average speed of all particles
Thermal energy
The total energy of alll particles in an object.
