Heat transfer Flashcards
what is heat?
heat is the amount of energy in the particles of a substance
what is the difference between temperature and heat?
heat is the amount of energy in the particles of a substance and temperature is a measure of the average energy of molecular motion in a substance.
how is heat conducted?
when metal is heated, the metal atoms pass on energy as in non metals.the free electrons also gain energy, but unlike the atoms they are free too move around. this allows them to spread the heat energy to atoms further away
what is conduction
the way heat travels through solids
What is convection?
it is the transfer of heat by a fluid such as a liquid or gas
between different areas of temperature
what is radiation
the emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles, especially high-energy particles which cause ionisation
name the electromagnetic spectrum in order of how dangerous they are
radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, visible light, ultraviolet,x-rays,gamma rays
