Heat Transfer Flashcards
What are the two ways to increase an objects temperature?
1) expose it to something with a higher temp
2) do work on it
More compression =
Higher temp
As a gas expands, it’s temp
Decreases
Energy in solids and liquids both have
KE and PE
Energy given to solids and liquids substances increase what’s
Both KE & PE energies
Internal energy
Sum of all energies in a substance
Heat def
The transfers of energy from a substance with more to a substance with less
Thermal equilibrium def
2 substance at the same temperature
- no heat is present
Heat transfer def
The movement of energy from one substance to another
First type of heat transfer
1) convection
Convection def
The transfer of heat by buoyant from one substance to another
Convection currents
Fluid flows in a specific direction
- heated fluid becomes less dense causing it to rise
- as fluid cools, it becomes more dense and sinks down
Forced convection def
Physically moving the fluid
- stirring cream into coffee
Sea breeze def
Air from above the water moves towards the land
- land is heated
See notes
Land breeze
Movement of air from land out of water
Land cools down faster
See notes
Water Temp does not change easily
