Gas & Thermal Expansion Flashcards
Temperature
The average kinetic energy of the atoms in a substance
How do you increase a substance temp?
You increase the KE from surrounding area
Thermal expansion
Objects are constrained, which means that it expands when heated and constricts when cooled
Bimetallic strips
Have different %
Brass(more expansion) & iron(less expansion)
Thermal expansion of liquids
Uniform change in volume, not change in each direction
When water is above 4C,
Water expands when heated
When water is below 4C
Water contracts when heated and expands when cooled
Thermocline
Line separating warm and cold water
Above 4C,
Warmer water on top
Water blow 4C
Cooler water becomes less dense & floats to the top, warmer water moves down
Turning over
When warmer displaces cooler water
Adds oxygen to the water at the bottom
Water is only one of a few substances whose solid floats on its liquid
Expansion of gasses
Volume expansion is greatest with gasses
Expansion is constant for any/all gasses
If an object is constrained
There will be a buildup of pressure and forces
What is thermal expansion caused by
Cause by the movement of atoms
