Heat Related Illness Flashcards
Heat exhaustion
Can be water depleted or sodium depleted types.
Milder form of illness leading to heat stroke
Heat stroke
Core temperature more than 40 with altered mental status.
Heat cramps
Acute and involuntary muscle pains usually in the lower extremities, abdomen or both that occur because of profuse sweating and subsequent sodium loss in sweat.
Heat syncope
Orthostatic syncopal or near syncopal episode that typically occurs in nonacclimated people under heat stress.
Rule of 9s
Which medications predispose pts to hyperthermia?
Diuretics and beta blockers
Parkland formula
In the first 24 hrs
4mL x weight in kg x % of body burned
(Half of that amount given in 1st 8 hours)
What are critical burns?
- partial thickness are greater than 30%
- full thickness greater than 10%
- inhalation injury
- partial or full thickness involving hands, feet, joints, face or genitalia
Radiation
Transfer of heat from electromagnetic waves
Conduction
Direct physical contact
Convection
Loss of heat that takes place when moving air picks up heat and carries it away
Evaporation
Conversion of a liquid to a gas
Heat stroke mimics (4)
Anticholinergic poisonings
Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (caused my antipsychotics and antiemetics)
Abruptly stopping Parkinson’s meds
Malignant hyperthermia (Anesthesia induced)
