Heat Radiation, Kinetic Theory and Conduction Flashcards
What are the three ways that heat is transferred?
Radiation. Convection and Conduction.
Define radiation.
The process in which energy is emitted as particles or waves.
Define convection.
The transfer of heat by circulated movements between fluids.
Define conduction.
The process where vibrating particles pass on their extra kinetic energy to neighbouring particles.
Describe the arrangement and features of particles in a solid.
The particles in a solid are arranged in straight rows and do not move - only vibrate about their fixed positions. There are strong forces of attraction holding the particles together.
Why does heat energy travel faster through metals than other materials?
Metals have free electrons therefore the electrons can move freely so heat is transferred much more quickly thorough the metal.
Conduction is faster in denser solids because…
the particles are closer together.
