Heat Engines Flashcards
1
Q
What is a Heat Engine?
A
- system that converts thermal energy into useful mechanical work
1. receives heat
2. converts part to work
3. rejects remaining to sink
4. repeats
2
Q
6 main components of a reciprocating engine?
A
TDC - Top dead centre, lowest volume
BDC - Bottom dead centre, highest volume
Intake - Brings in fuel/air mixture
Exhaust - Expels waste
Bore - Diameter of the piston
Stroke - Length from BDC to TDC
3
Q
4 stages of a Four Stroke Engine.
A
- Intake / Expansion. - brings mix in
- Compression - contracts
- Ignition /Expansion - ignites, expands piston, creates useful work
- Reject / Repeat - waste exits
4
Q
MEP Equation.
A
MEP = w(net) / V(max) - V(min)
// q(in) - q(out) / v1 - v2
5
Q
Reciprocating Engine: Displacement Volume Equation.
A
pi*D^2 / 4 * stroke
6
Q
Equation: Mass of Fluid (m)
A
PV / RT
7
Q
Air Standard Assumptions.
hint: 4
A
- working fluid is assumed to be air - acts as an ideal gas
- all processes reversible
- compression replaced with heat addition
- exhaust replaced with heat rejection
8
Q
Cold Air Standard Assumptions.
hint: 1 :(
A
- Specific heats constant (take at 25C)
