Q

Thermometer

A

A device used to measure temperature. Filled with mercury or alcohol. Measures temperature by heating up the liquid in the thermometer. This liquid then expands within the thermometer to a different point on a temperature scale, this tells us the temperature

Q

Particle Model of Matter

A

A scientific model of the structure of matter.

  1. All substances are made of tiny particles
  2. Particles are always in motion
  3. Particles have space between them
  4. When temperature increases, particle movement increases. When temperature decreases, particle movement decreases

Q

Energy

A

The ability to do work and cause change. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transformed from one type to another or transferred from one object to another.

Q

Bimetallic strip

A

Made of two different metals joined together. When the strip is heated one metal expands more than the other. The strip is forced to coil more tightly. When the strip cools the process is reversed. Used to flip a switch inside of a furnace, refrigerator, air conditioner, oven.

Q

Thermocouple

A

Wires made of two different metals that are twisted together. When the twists are heated, a small electrical current is generated. The amount of current is dependent on the temperature of the wire. The electrical currents from the thermocouple can be used to turn a switch on or off if the temperature changes.
