Heat and Temperature Flashcards
What is heat also known as
Thermal Energy
What is heat?
The speed of the particles in a substance.
Examples of how we use heat
Thermostat
oven
stove
Who was Lord Kelvin
He created the Kelvin Scale
What temperature in celsius is Absolute Zero
-273 Celsuis
What is a thermometer
It uses liquid mercury to determine the temperature of a substance.
What is a thermocouple
2 wires twisted together and when heat is applied an electronic current is produced.
What is a bimetallic strip
2 metals fused together. When heat is applied one expands faster than the other.
What is a recording Thermometer
A bimetallic strip attached to a long arm to record the temperature on a piece of paper
What is an Infrared Thermogram
When an object is warmer than absolute zero if gives off an infrared radiation that can be seen on a camera.
What are the 3 states of matter
Solid
Liquid
Gas
4 points of the particle matter
All matter is made up of particles
Particles are always moving
Particles have space between them
When heat is applied particles expand
What is the Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. It can only be transformed from one type to another and passed from one object to another.
Do particles expand or contract when heated?
expand
Do particles expand or contract when cooled?
Contract
What is Heat Capacity
the amount of thermal energy that heats or cools the object by 1 degree celsius
State all of the changes in states names
Melting (Fusion) Solid to Liquid Solidification (Freezing) Liquid to Solid Evaporation Liquid to Gas Condensation Gas to Liquid Sublimation Solid to Gas Deposition Gas to Solid
3 ways of transferring energy
Convection
Conduction
Radiation
What is Radiation
transfer of energy without any movement of matter
What is Conduction?
Only occurs in Solids
heat transferred by direct collision of particles
What is Convection?
Only occurs in liquids and gasses
When a particle is heated up it rises and pushes the colder particles down since they are cooled and the cycle continues.
What is Chemical energy
energy that is released through chemical reactions
What is electrical energy?
energy produced by hydroelectric dams
What is mechanical energy
energy released by pushing or pulling
What is geothermal energy?
Energy from the inside of the Earths core
What is solar energy?
Energy produced from the sun using solar panels
What is wind energy?
Energy produced from wind by wind turbines.
What is Nuclear Energy
energy produced by splitting chemical bonds.
What are 3 problems with fossil fuels?
Non non-renewable
produces carbon dioxide when burned
contributes to the green house effect
What are refrigerants?
Liquids that evaporate easily at low temperatures and remove thermal energy from foods.
What are some dangers with Thermal Energy
Burns, Fire hazards, chemicals in soil
