heat Flashcards
Expansion
occurs when solid particles are heated as they occupy more space.
Contraction
occurs when solids are cooler as particles occupy less space.
Potential energy
the energy that is stored within an object. Objects that are not in motion possess potential energy.
Temperature
a measure of the average kinetic energy of the
particles with in a object.
Heat
the energy transferred between two objects at different temperatures.
law of conservation
energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change forms.
Thermal energy
the energy possessed by an object or system due
to the movement of particles within.
heat transfer
heat transfer is the contact of hot and cold objects. this happens because the hot particles transfer their energy into the cold particles.
three examples of heat transfer
convection, conduction and radiation.
conduction
Conduction is the most common form of heat transfer and occurs via physical contact. this happens because of the the vibrating particles touching each other.
Convection
When a fluid, such as air or a liquid, is heated and then travels away from the source, it carries the thermal energy along.
why convection happens
this is because the hot particles create more kinetic energy therefore the cold dense particles sink.
insulation
warmer objects lose heat to surroundings and cold objects gain temperature to reach room temp.
radiation
Radiation travels through the atmosphere via electromagnetic waves. The hotter the object, the more heat it radiates.
