electromagnetic radiation Flashcards
how is electromagnetic radiation created?
Electromagnetic waves is produced naturally in the upper atmosphere.
electromagnetic radiation spectrum
The entire range of electromagnetic radiation that can be produced is called the electromagnetic spectrum.
what are the 7 regions of radiation?
radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x rays and gamma rays.
what are radio waves?
Radio waves are produced artificially by time-varying electric currents, however they have the lowest energy and the longest wave length.
devices that use radio waves
a speaker.
what are MICROWAVES?
Microwaves are absorbed by water, fats, and sugars in foods, causing the food molecules to vibrate and heat up.
what materials don’t work with microwaves?
Microwaves are not absorbed by glass, paper and many plastic and are reflected by metal.
what is INFRARED RADIATION?
Infrared radiation is a type of radiant energy that is transferred from the Sun.
example of infrared?
would be the heat.
what is visible light?
Visible light is generally defined as the wavelengths that are visible to most human eyes.
what is ultraviolet light?
Ultraviolet light is a type of electromagnetic radiation that is responsible for tans and damaging living tissue.
why is ultraviolet harmful?
Due to particles higher energies, a process occurs in which electrons break away from atoms. this process causes UV to be harmful.
an example of ultraviolet?
the suns rays.
what are X rays?
X-rays are produced when electrons hit a metal surface therefore they are used to investigate structure.
what are Gamma rays?
Gamma rays are produced in making nuclear power and bombs. Due to their high energy, gamma rays can interact with matter.
