What would cause a heart sound to split?
A
I the valves of the left and right sections of the heart don’t close at the same time.

Is it normal to hear extra sounds in hearts?
A
Yes, but it would be a third sound in early diastole and a fourth sound which is atrial systole.

What causes heart murmurs?
A
Turbulent blood flow usually due to stenosis (narrowed valve) or a valve not closing properly.

When do murmurs occur?
A
When the blood flow is highest. This means you can predict where in the cardiac cycle they will occur.

What is cardiac output?
A
Stroke volume x heart rate. (The heart ejects a stroke volume with each beat.)
