Heart Rate And Blood Pressure Flashcards
What kind of questions can you ask your client when testing their heart rate and blood pressure, to ensure the test is repeatable, reliable and valid?
Have you exercised today?
Have you had coffee today?
Are you on medication that could affect your results?
When did you last eat?
What are two things you need to do before conducting a heart rate, blood pressure, cardio or strength tests on them?
- Ask questions
2. Explain the purpose of the test
What is a normal resting heart rate reading?
60-80 beats per minute (BPM)
What are three things that heart rate can be affected by?
Stress, caffeine and exercise
Where is the radical pulse located?
It can be found within the palm of your hand facing up, 3-4cm below the base of the thumb
Describe the protocol you would use for measuring a clients pulse
- Have client sit down for 3 mins (walking around can elevate heart rate)
- Set up stop watch that you can use to time the pulse with
- Find clients pulse
- Count number of bears for one minute, or you can count beats for 30 seconds and times by 2
What does blood pressure measure?
The pressure of circulating blood pushing on the walls of the arteries and veins during a heart beat (it can be an indicator of cardiovascular health)
What three things do you need to manually test a clients blood pressure?
A blood pressure cuff, sphygmomanometer and a stethoscope
What two numbers are you reading when measuring blood pressure?
- Systolic
2. Diastolic
What is systolic pressure?
The maximum pressure your heart exerts when beating
What is diastolic pressure?
The amount of pressure in your arteries between beats
What is considered a normal blood pressure reading?
A normal reading is systolic less than 120 and diastolic less than 80
