Heart Qi Deficiency
Etiology: old age, degenerative change, congenital deficiency, chronic illness, sudden illness
Symptoms: palpitations, shortness of breath, chest stuffiness aggravated by movement, spontaneous sweating, pale face, fatigued, lassitude
T: pale, white fur
P: deficient; knotted; intermittent (irregular beats)
Biomedicine: neurosis, heart disease, mental depression, anxiety
Heart Yang Deficiency
Etiology: Arises from Heart Qi Deficiency.
Commentary: Yang fails to warm Heart. Qi is Yang in quality, so Yang deficiency is more severe pattern. Unable to move and warm blood > cold, pale > cold syndrome
Symptoms: All symptoms of HT Qi Def., intolerance of Cold, cold extremities, pericardial pain, bright pale face, edema in extremities, lips are dusky purple, pale
T: Pale/purple, enlarged, black dots, moist/white fur
P: Thready and weak; knotted

Heart Blood Deficiency
Etiology: Chronic disease, mental fatigue from overthinking, overconsumption of Heart-Blood, Stomach-Spleen Deficiency, Heavy blood loss
Symptoms: Shen disturbance, palpitation, poor memory, insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep, face is dull and pale, lips are pale
T: pale, thin white fur
P: thready, weak
Biomedicine: Anemia, neutropenia (low amount of neutrophils (white blood cells)), chronic heart disease
Heart Yin Deficiency
Etiology: Emotional frustration, chronic disease, febrile disease. Arises from Kidney Yin or Liver Yin Deficiency
Symptoms: Palpitations, irritability, insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep, 5 palm heat, malar flush, low grade fever, night sweats, dry mouth and throat, boils of lips and tongue
T: Red, dry
P: Rapid, thready
Biomedicine:
Heart Yang Collapse/Exhaustion
Etiology: Severe Cold accumulation in body > connected to environmental factors and constitution
*Critical condition
Symptoms: Palpitation, fullness and stuffiness in chest, clammy and cold, profuse sweating, cold extremities, weak breathing, pale/gray face, purple-blue lips, unconsciousness
T: Pale purple, slippery
P: Minute
Biomedicine: Heart attack, angina pectoris (condition marked by severe pain in chest, neck shoulders, arms, caused by inadequate supply of blood)
Heart Fire Rising
Etiology: Emotional disturbance, stress, abnormal 7 emotions obstruct normal Qi functions leading to fire, external pathological Heat-Fire, overeating spicy foods
Symptoms: irritability, sporadic palpitations, restlessness, inability or no desire to sleep, red and painful boils in tongue and lips, red face, thirst, painful and dark urination > connection to SI, dry stool, epistaxis (nose bleed), hematemesis (vomit blood)
T: Red, dry, yellow fur
P: Rapid
Biomedicine: Neurosis , recurring boils, urine infection
Phlegm Misting the Mind
Etiology: accumulation of Phlegm, emotional depression, attack of external pathogenic Dampness
Commentary: etiology leads to Qi stagnation > affects transformation and transportation of Body Fluids
Symptoms: dementia, haziness, distress, apathy, abnormal behavior > strange movements, incoherent speech, abrupt coma w/ saliva running out, rattling in throat, face is dusky and dull, fullness and bloating in abdomen, unconsciousness if severe
T: dusky, white greasy fur
P: Slippery
Biomedicine: dementia, epilepsy, seizures, hysteria, depressive psychosis, neurosis, coma
Phlegm-Fire Disturbing the Heart
Etiology: mental dysfunction, anger (especially leads to Qi Stagnation > Fire, which scorches Fluids > Phlegm), Exterior pathogenic Heat > Phlegm
Symptoms: Palpitations, insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep, easily frightened, sputum and rattling in throat, dark and yellow urine, dry stool. When severe > delirium, abnormal reactions > laughing and crying alternating, mania, mouth is dry and bitter
T: Red, yellow/greasy fur
P: Slippery and rapid

Etiology: Yang Qi Deficiency, Blood Stasis
Symptoms: stuffiness in chest, pain radiating down left shoulder and arm, palpitations, localized pain > sharp, twisting sensation in chest, more sever at night
T: dusky purple, ecchymosis (black dots, discoloration of skin caused by bleeding
P: Thready and choppy; intermittent; knotted

Etiology: Phlegm Retention
Symptoms: stuffiness and fullness in chest, obesity, sputum in throat
T: dusky purple with thick/greasy fur
P: wiry and slippery
