Heart Disease Flashcards
Types of cardiovascular diseases
Coronary artery disease
Congestive heart failure
Coronary artery disease
Inner lining of the normal coronary artery is smooth and free of blockage
- CAD: plaque builds up inside the coronary arteries
Atherosclerosis
Hardening of the arteries
Angina
Chest pain due to ischemia of the heart muscle
- occurs when the supply of oxygenated blood cannot meet the demands of the heart muscle due to obstruction in coronary artery
Stable vs unstable angina
Stable: symptoms are relative predictable, generally brief, subside with rest or medication
Unstable: caused by a sudden increase in the artery’s obstruction
Treatment of angina
Medications - dilates the coronary artery and improves blood and oxygen supply to the heart
Myocardial infarction
Coronary artery becomes blocked
Blood flow is closed off and a heart attack begins
If blockage continues, parts of the heart muscle start to die
Heart may stop beating (cardiac arrest)
