heart circulation Flashcards
how much blood does the heart pump per heart beat
70 mL
how is cardiac output calculated
stroke volume x heart rate
what does the cardiovascular system include
Heart, blood, veins (move towards the heart), arteries (move away from heart)
anatomy of the right side of the heart
Aorta, Superior vena cava, pulmonary veins, right atrium, valves, right ventricle, inferior vena cava
anatomy of left side of the heart
pulmonary artery, pulmonary veins, left atrium, left ventricle, valves and septum
what does the left and right atria do
receive blood from lungs and body
what do the left and right ventricles do
they pump blood to the lungs and body (left ventricle is thicker and stronger then the right ventricle because it has to push blood to the entire body)
(right ventricle just has to push blood to the lungs)
what is the septum
the thick muscular wall separating the ventricles
where does the superior vena cava receive blood from
top of the body
what does the aorta do?
The main artery moving blood AWAY from the heart
what does the pulmonary artery do
sends blood to the lungs
what does the pulmonary vein do
receives blood from lungs
what does the inferior vena cava do
receives blood from the lower body
what do coronary arteries do
they send blood to the heart
how many valves are there and what do they do
there are four one way valves in the heart to make sure blood does not flow backwards
what do most arteries do, and what colour are they on diagrams?
they carry oxygenated blood away from the heart, arteries and oxygenated blood are shown as red on diagrams
what is the pulmonary artery, and what colour is it on diagrams?
pulmonary artery is shown as blue on diagrams and it moves deoxygenated blood away from lungs
describe what happens with the diastole (the dub sound of our heart)
blood rushes in when the heart relaxes
describe what happens with the systole (Lub sound)
blood pushes out when the heart contracts
why is the right ventricle smaller than the left?
the right ventricle only pumps blood to the lungs while the left pumps blood to the whole body
