Heart Adaptations Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 2 general adaptations of the heart? (2)
A
- Septum - cardiac muscle wall separating the two sides of the heart (and therefore the types of blood)
- Apex - ventricle contraction occurs from the apex upwards, ensuring that blood is pumped up and out of the arteries.
2
Q
What are the adaptations of the right ventricle?
A
Thinner cardiac muscle wall b/c the dexoxy blood is only travelling a short distance.
3
Q
What are the adaptations of the left ventricle?
A
Thicker cardiac muscle wall allows oxygenated blood to be pumped at a HP to the rest of the body to meet oxygen demand for cellular aerobic respiration.
4
Q
What are the functions and adaptations of the aorta?
A
Pumps HP oxygen-rich blood from the left side of the heart to tissues with a high oxygen demand, undergoing aerobic respiration.
