Hearing Flashcards
distal vs proximal stimuli
sources of sound vs physical dimensions
what is distal stimuli?
something vibrating like vocal chords and tuning fork
what is proximal stimulus?
sound waves; changes in air pressure
compressions vs rarefactions
c- high air pressure (moles close together); r-low air pressure (moles spread apart)
3 dimensions of sound
frequency, amplitude and timbre
what is the audibility curve?
shows effect of frequency on loudness at threshold; absolute threshold; most sensitive in the 2,000-6,000 Hz
what two things factor into loudness?
frequency and amplitude
What are equal loudness contours?
everything on each contour has a standard of 1,000 Hz; participants had to adjust loudness of diff frequencies
Fourier Analysis of Complex Waveform
breakdown of complex wave into harmonics
what is the fundamental frequency?
the first harmonic– pitch
what is the timbre in terms of the Fourier spectrum?
overall pattern of harmonics and amplitude
sound onset vs decay
beginning of sound and how sound goes to rest; helps diff sounds w same pitch
