Tuberculosis of the brain

•1 month history of fevers, rigors, lethargy and rapid weight loss - recent return from Sudan
what does this person have?
Miliary TB -> disseminated TB in blood stream
- 19 year old male
- 2/12 history of shortness of breath, fatigue, weight loss and vomiting

what does the person have?
- pericardial tb
- 47 year old female
- Ascites, fevers, thickened peritoneum on CT
what does this person have?
- This could be TB but other things need to be ruled out such as sarcoidosis.
What is TB?
Infection
- Affects any part of the body
- Curable (6 months of combination therapy)
- Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Contagious
- If affecting the lungs (pulmonary)
- Transmission via airborne particles
What happens when you contract TB?
how do you test for latent tb?
T - spot is used for those with weakened immune system.
Quintiferon is used before.
Once you checked if they have TB -> see if they have clinical TB - this might be active
DONT DO THIS TEST FOR ACTIVE - MORE FALSE POSITIVE!
What is the number 1 curable infectious disease
Why is that?
TB as a cause of death–Number 1 amongst curable infectious diseases

–overcrowding
–poverty
