it is the continues, systematic collection, analysis and interpretation of health-related data needed for the planning, implementation and evaluation of public health practice

1) serve as early warnings for impending public health emergencies
2) track the impact of an intervention
3) monitor and clarify the epidemiology of health problems to allow priorities to be set and inform public health policies and strategies

the interpretation of raw data into something more meaningful in terms of trend analysis

it is interested in any data source that provides health to health-related information. data sources like Census and civil registration data are useful as they help to build a picture of the population’s health.

demography data (GRO,Census)
healthcare data
lifestyle/public health data
what does a dead certificate do
it provides all the data for mortality data analysis it also includes the events or conditions that lead to the individual’s death. they are generally valid and reliable ways to record the cause of death.
