Health status indicators Flashcards
What self-assessed health status?
measure based on a persons own opinion about how they feel about their h+w, state of mind, and life in general.
What is life expectancy?
the number of years of life remaining to a person at a particular age if death rates do not change.
What is mortality?
Death in an individual or the level of death in a population or group.
What is maternal mortality?
Maternal mortality ratio?
Death of a mother during pregnancy, childbirth or within six weeks of delivery.
number of mothers who die bc of pregnancy/childbirth per 100,000 live births.
What is infant mortality?
Infant mortality rate?
The death of a child between birth and their first birthday.
rate of deaths of infants between birth and their first birthday, usually expressed per 1000 live births.
What is under-5 mortality?
What is under-5 mortality rate?
number of deaths of children under-5 years of age per 1000 live births.
rate of deaths of children under-5 years…(same as above)
What is morbidity?
Refers to ill-health in an individual and the levels of ill-health in a population or group.
What is incidence?
The number or rate of new cases of a condition during a given period of time.
What is prevalence?
The number of cases of a particular disease/condition present in a population at a given time.
What is burden of disease?
2 points
A measure of the impact of diseases and injuries, specifically measures the gap between current health status and an ideal situation where everyone lives to an old age free of disease and disability.
Burden of disease is measured in a unit called the DALY.
What is disability adjusted life year (DALY)?
A measure of burden of disease, one DALY equals one year of healthy life lost due to premature death and time lived with illness, disease or injury.
What is years of life lost (YLL)?
2 points
number of years of life lost a result of premature death.
It is calculated by subtracting the age at death from life expectancy.
What is years lived with disability (YLD)?
A calculation of the amount of healthy years of a life lost as a result of living with disease, injury or disability.
What is health adjusted life expectancy (HALE)?
A measure of burden of disease, number of years in full health that a person can expect to live, based on current rates of ill health and mortality.
