What is preventative care?

What is primary prevention?
An intervention that prevents the disease process from ever beginning in a susceptible population.
What is secondary prevention?
An intervention that identifies and stops a disease early on in the disease process before the individual even realizes anything is wrong in an asymptomatic population
What is tertiary prevention?
An intervention that is used for individuals who already have clinical signs of the disease. These interventions attempt to cure an individual, decrease morbidity, decrease mortality, or increase quality of life.
What are the screening recommendations for hypertension?
- 18-39 –> every 3-5 years
- 40 or those at high risk –> annually
What are the screening recommendations for prediabetes and diabetes?
Adults (35-70) + overweight –> every 3 years
What are the screening recommendations for hepatitis C?
- Adults 18-79 –> one time screening
- those at high risk –> periodically
What is the screening recommendation for HIV in pregnant women?
CDC recommends during third trimester
What is the screening recommendation for tobacco use?
every health visit
