  • Management surveys are not intrusive, samples are only taken in reasonably accessible areas. Where samples cannot be taken, asbestos is presumed to be present
  • Refurbishment/demolition - Fully intrusive survey to identify all areas within property where asbestos is present

Explain the hierarchy of controls - 5

A
  1. Elimination - Redesign the activity so the hazard is removed
  2. Substitution - Replace the materials used or the proposed work with a less hazardous one
  3. Engineering controls - separate the hazard from operators by methods e.g. enclosing or guarding dangerous items of machinery
  4. Administrative controls - identifying and implementing the procedures needed to work safely
  5. PPE - only after all the previous measures have been tried and found ineffective in controlling risks must PPE be used
