What is difference between a risk and hazard?

A

A risk is the chance (whether it is high or low) of a hazard causing harm to a person.
A hazard is a potential source of harm.

What is a risk assessment?

A

The RICS define it as carefully examining what in your work could cause harm to people, so that you can judge whether or not you have taken enough precautions to prevent harm.

  1. Identify hazards

A

Prior to appointing a contractor, you must always ensure they have adequate H&S knowledge. Three checks:

Memberships / professional trade body (e.g. Construction Skills Certification Scheme)
Insurance
References
Also always ensure adequate permits to work are issued.

What are the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases, and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (1995) (RIDDOR)

A
  • Trigger date for reporting injuries is over 7 days incapacitation
  • Such an injury must be reported to the HSE within 15 days from the date of accident
  • All employers must keep a record of all 3-day plus injuries
  • An accident book must be kept for a minimum of 3 years after occupational accident
