What was the purpose of the HASAWA 1974?
Set up by Government to improve H&S in the workplace
What are the duties of an employer under the HASAWA 1974?
It states employers have a duty to:
‘ensure as far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of employees’
Other duties under this act include:
• Provide and maintain safe systems of work
• Ensure there is no risk in substance use, transport, storage or handling
• Provide safe equipment, plant and machinery
• Provide information and training
• Provide adequate welfare
What are the duties of a worker / employee under the HASAWA 1974?
Workers have a duty of care for their own safety and others that may be affected by their actions.
Workers must co-operate with employers and co-workers to help meet legal requirements
Who has to provide you with PPE on site?
Your Employer must by law

What does the RICS GN of Surveying Safely include?

What are the changes in the CDM regulations 2015?
Principal designer and principal contractor replaces CDM coordinated
Who can act as a principal designer?
Usually Architect or specialist firms
Normally the Contractor when using D&B
Can be QS or anyone involved with management of construction projects
What is an F10?
F10 is a form submitted to the HSE for all notifiable projects
Legally requirement to notify HSE
Has to be visible on all building sites and have project details
Live document and has to be updated – if project overruns, F10 needs to be extended
F10 form – contains details – when works take place, where, who by.
What construction projects are notifiable to the HSE?
- Last longer than 30 days
- More than 20 workers at a time
- Exceed 500 man days
How would you carry out a risk assessment when going to site?
- Ensure correct PPE
- Tell someone you are visiting site (put it in your diary)
- Tell someone what time you’ll be back
- Sign in on site / go to contractor office
- Do site induction with contractor
- Toolbox talks (update of what’s going on on site)
