What is fitness ?
The ability to cope with the demands of the environment
What are health related components ?
Relate directly to our health and meeting the demands of everyday life
Name the health related components ?
Cardiovascular endurance
Muscular endurance
Flexibility
Speed
Strength
Power
What are skill related components ?
Relate to the skills and abilities needed to perform well in sporting situations
Name the skill related components ?
Agility
Balance
Coordination
Reaction time
What is cardiovascular endurance ?
The ability to exercise the whole body for long periods of time without tiring
The heart, lungs and blood work together to supply oxygen to the working muscles and the energy is provided via aerobic respiration
An example of this is marathon running, triathletes, game players
What is muscular endurance ?
The ability your muscles to work continuously without getting tired
Force productions is maintained over sustained periods and activities that use the same muscle groups repeatedly
Example :
Rowers, cyclists, rock climbers
What is flexibility ?
The range of movement possible around a joint
It is determined by the elasticity of muscles, tendons and ligaments
Examples :
Gymnastics, diving, swimming, martial arts
What is strength ?
The ability to exert the maximum amount of force in one go
It can be both static and dynamic and activities that require the athlete to produce large amounts of force in one go
Examples :
Weight-lifting, rugby, gymnastics, football
What is power ?
The ability to preform strength exercises at speed
Power = strength x speed and explosive movements such as running, jumping, and throwing
Examples :
Throws and jumps, basketball, boxing
What is speed ?
The ability to preform a movement quickly
When athletes need to cover a set distance in a short time as possible, or skills that require quick movements
Examples :
Sprinting, baseball, badminton
What is agility ?
The ability to change the body position quickly under control
Activités that rely on changing direction at speed without losing balance
Examples :
Teams sports, racquet sports, gymnastics
What is balance ?
Being able to maintain a position, either static or dynamic
A stable base of support is fundamental for preforming a range of skills
Examples :
Gymnastics, team sports, slalom skiing
What is coordination ?
Th he ability to use 2 or more body parts at the same time
Must skills require the use of the senses and multiple body parts together
Example :
Racquet, sports, catching & throwing
What is reaction time ?
The time it takes to respond to a stimulus
When there is a definite start to a race, or when athletes have a very short time to react to something
Examples :
Sprinting, motor sports, cricket, tennis
