Health Psychology Flashcards
What is health psychology? What do health psychologists do?
Health psychologists use knowledge of psychology and health to promote wellbeing and healthy behaviours, especially at population level. They are specially trained to understand the psychological and emotional aspects of health and illness.
What psychological influences affect the health of individuals? What characteristics are correlated with mortalities?
Psychosocial factors in health
“Psychosocial” factors such as stress, hostility, depression, hopelessness, and job control seem associated with physical health—particularly heart disease. Adverse risk profiles in terms of psychosocial factors seem to cluster with general social disadvantage. Low socioeconomic position is consistently associated with increased risk of premature death.
What is a healthy way of coping with chronic illness?
Eating a healthy diet.
Getting as much physical activity as you can.
Avoiding negative coping mechanisms like alcohol and substance abuse.
Exploring stress-relief activities like meditation.
Letting of obligations that you don’t really need to do or want to do.
Asking for help when you need it.
Staying in touch with family and friends.
