Define ‘health protection’:
the protection of individuals, groups and populations through expert advice and effective collaboration to prevent and mitigate the impact of infectious disease, environmental, chemical and radiological threats
What is a hazard?
a potential source of harm - any substance or agent that poses a risk to health
What is a risk?
the likelihood of harm arising from exposure to a hazard
What 2 groups can hazards be split into?
1) radiation, chemical and environmental hazards
2) infectious agents that cause disease
What is the name of the UK government body that researches threats arising from our environment?
The Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards (CRCE)
what is a medical approach to health improvement?
reducing illness and early death through medical interventions targeted at risk groups or a whole population
what is a behavioural approach to health improvement?
motivating people to adopt health behaviours
what is an educational approach to health improvement?
providing information and knowledge to help people make informed choices about their health
what is an empowerment approach to health improvement?
facilitating individuals or communities to take control of their own health
what is a social change approach to health improvement?
making changes in social and environmental conditions
