What is health protection?
Broken down into 3 categories:
Preventing and controlling infectious diseases
Reducing the adverse affects of chemical, microbiological and radio logical hazards
Preparing for potential or emerging threats
When is ‘notifying’ to Public Health England justifiable?
When the patient:
- Has a notifiable disease; OR
- In the views of the RMP presents/could present significant harm to human health (emerging or new infections)
- Is contaminated, such as with chemical or radiation, in a manner which, in the view of the RMP presents or could present significant harm to human health
- Or has died with, but not necessarily because of, a notifiable disease or other infectious diseases or contamination that presents or could present (or could have in the past) significant harm to human health
Sexual health- what is the National Chlamydia Screening Programme?
Diagnosis of Chlamydia in GUM clinics and community based settings (post 2008) for those aged 15-24 years
In what age group is the impact of poor sexual health greatest?
Where are the highest rates of STIs in the country? What does this reflect?
Young heterosexual adults and in men who have sex with men
Highest rates of STIs in urban areas, reflecting concentrations of the population who are at greatest risk
What is the chain of infection?
Reservoir –> Portal of exit –> Mode of transmission –> Portal of entry –> susceptible host –> Person to Person spread –> reservoir
What is the timeline of a disease from infection to resolution/death?
Latent period (acquires infection) –> Infectious Period (symptoms shown just for the last portion of infectious period) –> resolution. The incubation period is from the beginning of the latent period to the point at which the person shows symptoms of the disease.
What is an epidemic?
A serious outbreak in a single community, population or region
What is a pandemic?
Epidemics spreading around the world affecting hundreds of thousands of people, across many countries
What is ‘The New Public Health’
The science and art of promoting health, preventing disease, and prolonging life through the organised efforts of society
What is equity?
An ethical concept with fixed resources. May lead to taking from the ‘haves’ to ‘the have nots’
