Identifying, measuring, tracking and reducing health disparities through the six determinants of health
What is the purpose of health promotion?
To help individuals make personal choices about their lifestyle that will have a positive outcome on their health
What does “USPSTF” stand for?
United States Preventative Task Force
What is the role of USPSTF?
To meet and review scientific evidence for each of the current health care screening guidelines as well as preventative medications, vaccines, and counseling
How does the USPSTF work?
through census the task force assigns a grade to each recommendation based on net benefits for the patient population
What is the goal of primary prevention?
to PREVENT disease BEFORE it occurs
What are some examples of primary prevention?
- Legislation to enforce or ban hazardous products
- No smoking campaign
- Seat belt campaign
- Education about healthy safe habits
- immunizations
- stress reduction

- Skin cancer preventative measures
What is the goal of secondary prevention?
SCREENING and DETECTION of disease (interventions towards early diagnosis)
What are some examples of secondary prevention?
- Screening for TB
- Low dose aspirin to prevent MI
- Diet programs
- Regular exams (mammogram, pap smear)
- Quantiferon Gold
- Lead screening
- anemia screening
- Height, weight, BMI
What is the goal of tertiary prevention?
the RESTORATION of health AFTER an illness or disease has occurred
What are some examples of tertiary prevention?
- Rehab
- Chronic disease management
- Support groups
- Vocational rehab

number of EXISTING cases of a disease in a population a single period of time
Prevalence rate
Number of cases of a disease at a point in time/ the percentage of the population at that point in time
Incidence
number of NEW cases of a diagnosis that develops in a population at risk during a specific time period
