Biomedical Model
- Healthy state- disabled state- medical intervention- a healthy state
- Uni-directional
- Disability is caused by trauma, disease or health condition
- Health is the absence of disease
- Ignores the role of the individual in society
- Outcome measures are determined by the health condition, not the effect on the individual.
- Perspective on disability is limited to changes in the health condition
Social Model
- Disability is a social issue
- Promotes equality by changing society’s perspective on disability
- Restrictions that are experienced by people with a health condition are due to the environment
- Aims to change the environment to suit the needs of the individual
- Ignores characteristics of the individual that may contribute to disability
Psychological
Not necessarily its own model but used in conjunction with the others to form a more holistic perspective on health
Biopsychosocial
- Social, Psychological and Biomedical models interact to form a holistic perspective on health
- All interact but are independent of one another
- Does not identify a specific cause of disability

Enabling-disablement process
Transitional factors: Behavioural, biological, environmental, lifestyle
No disablement condition, pathology, impairment, functional limitations
Quality of life
4 elements of the disablement model
Active pathology- disruption of the standard health condition
Impairment- Total loss of physical or psychological structure/ state
Functional limitations- Limitations in the performance of activities
Disability- Day to day restrictions in society and life
