What’s the definition of health literacy?
A
people having enough knowledge, skill and confidence to use health information, to be active partners in their care, and to navigate health and social care systems.

- half of Scotland’s adult population, don’t have high enough health literacy to cope with the demands of everyday life.

- chunk and check
- get patient to explain the info back to you (teach back)

A
FOG index

how is the FOG index calculated?
A
- sample 100 words
- count number of words + sentences
- calculate the avg sentence length
- calculate the % of complex words (3+ syllables)
- add % and avg sentence length together
- times it by 0.4 to get the FOG index
- add 5 to get the reading age
