Factors influencing psychosocial functioning?
mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being,
Psychosocial functioning?
one’s psychological development in, and interaction with, a social environment.
individual needs not be fully aware of this relationship with his or her environment.
Health inequity?
Those inequalities in health that are deemed unfair or unjust
because they stem from some form of injustice related to social, political, historical inequities-unfair distribution of the underlying social determinants of health
EX: immigrants, negative americans, language police, mental health individuals who cut themselves, religion differences
Health inequality?
differences in health status or in the distribution of health determinants between different population groups.
Racialization?
race distinctions or of giving a racial character to someone.
Cultural sensitivity?
skills that allow providers to understand, appreciate, and work with individuals from cultures other than their own.
Cultural competence?
ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds
Cultural Safety?
Being aware of assumptions & stereotypes RN may have about certain groups of people that may influence how they provide care. (Example?)
Consider uniqueness of patient. (Example?)
Consider & address power, social & structural inequities (Example?)
Requires actions that recognize & nurture cultural identity.
Distinguish between:
cultural competence, cultural sensitivity, & cultural safety

Key Components to Conducting a ‘Culturally Safe’ Interview?
- critical reflective practice
- building of trust
- authentic inquiry (try and look at who the person actually is)
- active listening (open posture, no hand crossing)
- respectful engagement
- attention to context of people’s lives

- genetics
- physical health: not being able to eat when stressed
- physical fitness: enables the body to reach physical potential
