This is because material culture changes much more quickly than the nonmaterial culture.

- Parsons/Functionalist
- As changes occur in one part of society, adjustments must be made in other parts. Otherwise, society’s equilibrium will be threatened and strain will occur.

- Differentiation (increasing complexity of social organization)
- Adaptive Upgrading (social institutions become more specialized)
- Inclusion of groups that were previously excluded.
- Value Generalization. (Development of new values that tolerate and legitimate a greater range of activities)
