Health & Disease Flashcards
Indicators of Health
- Infant Mortality Rate
- Life Expectancy
Social Factors in LDCs and DCs affecting health
- Lifestyle
- Diet
- Education and Government Campaigns
Economic Factors affecting health in LDCs and DCs
- Poverty & Affluence
- Investment and Accessibility of Healthcare
Environmental factors affecting health in DCs and LDCs
- Level of Sanitation
- Living Conditions
- Access to safe drinking water
Two types of diseases
Chronic/Non-communicable diseases and communicable/infectious diseases
Features of non-communicable diseases
- Degeneration of body organs/tissues
- Lifestyle, age reasons
- Cancer, Coronary heart disease, Stroke
Features of communicable diseases
- Infectious, transmitted by virus/parasite/bacteria
- Spreads from animals to human or between humans
- Prevalent in LDCs
- COVID 19, SARS, HIV/AIDS Etc.
Features of Expansion diffusion
- Diffuses outwards from the source into new areas
- Weakens as it goes further from the source
- Is strongest at the originating area/source
Features of Relocation diffusion
- Moves from the source to a completely new area
- Over great distances
- Often occurs due to migration
Level of intensity of infectious diseases
Endemic -> Constantly present
Epidemic -> Spreads to large number of people in a short period of time
Pandemic -> Rapidly spreads to many people across large distances, widespread across continents/globally
Economic factors for spread of malaria
- Cost and limitations of healthcare
- Population movement due to efficient transport
Social Factors for spread of Malaria
- Overcrowded and poor living conditions
- Lack of sanitation
Environmental Factors for spread of malaria
- Poor drainage and stagnant water
- Weather & climate of tropical regions
- Monsoon season
Economic factors affecting spread of DENGUE
- Globalisation and mobility of people
- Limitations and Cost of healthcare
