Define health
A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being without merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Mortality
The state of being subject to death
Morbidity
The state of being ill or diseased, or the ocurence of a disease or condition that damages health and quality of life.
Attack rate
The number of cases of a disease diagnosed in an area, divided by the total population, over the period of an epidemic.
Case mortality rate
The number of people dying from a disease divided by the number of those diagnosed as having the disease.
Chronic
A long lasting condition which could possibly last a life time
Crude birth rate
The number of live births per thousand of the population per year
Crude death rate
The number of deaths ketch thousand of the population per year
Endemic
There are constantly present low levels of infection
Epidemic
a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time.
Pandemic
An infection which is prevalent over a whole country or over the world.
Famine
A decline in the access to food, not necessarily the absence of food.
Infant mortality rate
The number of deaths of children under the age of one, expressed per thousand live births per year.
Age specific death rate
This refers to the total number of deaths per 1000 people of a given age.
DALY’S
Disability adjusted life years - healthy years lost due to the premature mortality or living in a state of less than full health.
Diseases of affluence
Diseases that are though to be as a result of increasing wealth within a society.
Health care
The prevention, treatment and management of illness and the preservation of mental health through the services offered by the medical, nursing and allied healht professions.
Malnutrition
ill health caused by a diet deficiency, either in amount (quantity) or balance (quality).
Poverty
Is the deprivation of common necessities that determine quality of life, such as food, clothing, shelter and drinking water.
Periodic hunger
Short term lack of food resulting from crop failure.
Undernourishment
Those who receive less than 90% of the minimum dietary intake over a long-term time period, they lack energy for an active and productive life and are susceptible to infectious diseases.
