What is health?
Health is multifaceted well-being (physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual, etc.) and not only being without disease
Is health a resource?
Health is a resource made up by physical, mental, social wellbeing, and overall quality of life
What is well-being
Well-being can encompass both physical and mental health and refers to the quality of life, involves things that are good for individuals and their communities, and contributes to society while maintaining and gaining a sense of purpose.
what types of things effect health?
Many things affect health: they can be categorized into individual behaviors, genetics, epigenetics, and other external factors such as the social determinants of health.
what are individual behaviors?
One’s choices and actions that may impact their health, for example, their activity level, nutrition, substance use, and risky behaviors.
What are genetics
an individual’s unique DNA profile. Most disorders and diseases that are not caused by pathogens are influenced by genetics
what are epigenetics?
the changes to how genes work or express themselves. They are a new field of study but we know that epigenetics can change over a lifetime. Epigenetics can be caused by environmental, inherited, and behavioral factors.
What is the social determinants of health?
A set of factors that dictate health outcomes. They deal with structural or systemic factors, and they often include things like education, health care quality, built or general environment, social factors, and economic stability
What is the social ecological model?
This is a model that gives a visual representation of the different levels of factors that can affect a person’s health. It allows the viewer to use it to help find places to intervene to improve the health of the individual or a group of individuals.
Individual
knowledge, attitude, and beliefs one has.
Relationship
family, peers, partners, or other social networks
Community
neighborhoods, schools workplaces, and social or religious organizations.
Society
policies and social and cultural norms.
