Q

What is wrong with using the word problem?

A

It identifies something that can change however does not go about identifying any of the steps needed to take in order to deal with the issue. Furthermore, it may add to any stress of anxiety the patient is having by making them feel at fault for their situation

Q

What is better about using the word issue over the word problem

A

Assumes there is a solution and that the patient can self identify what this may be, therefore you are facilitating the patient and helping them consider what they can do about their health

Q

What is an issue to consider with assuming patient resourcefulness

A

A patient may not be able to retain, understand and weigh up pros and cons therefore take responsibility for themselves and their choices. For example, someone with end stage dementia would not be able to identify issues therefore it would be difficult to facilitate patient participation

17
Q

What is an issue to consider with needing a mutually trusting and respectful relationship

A

If the patient is manipulative or dishonest, or they believe that you as the doctor are the same, then there will be no progress and the process cannot take place

18
Q

What is an issue to consider with needing change and action

A

The patient needs to have a baseline level of motivation and sense of where they want to be - you need to be non judgemental and let the patient want to make change in their own time
