What is the health belief model?
’
Is a psychological theory that tries to explain why people do or don’t engage in healthy behaviour the model can be summed up in free questions that an individual may ask themselves
What are the three questions? An individual may ask themselves when it comes to the health belief model?
- how serious are the consequences?(perceived seriousness.)
- How am I to get the disease?(perceived susceptibility)
- What are the advantages versus disadvantages of taking this action?(cost. -benefit analysis which we up perceived benefits versus perceived barriers. )
What is perceived susceptibility?
How much a person believes they are at risk of a certain health issue
Perceived seriousness
How serious are the consequences
Cost and benefit analysis
Weighing up the balance between the proceeds benefits of changing behaviour and the perceived barriers
What are demographic variables?
Characteristics such as age, gender and culture
What are cues to actions?
Triggers that prompt people to take action in their health
What is self efficacy?
A persons confidence in their ability to take necessary action
