1) MUST specify the behaviour to be changed
2) understand the nature of the behaviour and underpinning influences

Why don’t people behave in ways that promote better health ?

A

1) lack of capability ( lack of knowledge or skills) - both psychological and physical capability.
2) insufficient opportunity ( issues around time , social factors , resources )
3) lack of motivation : because healthy behaviours are usually difficult boring or unpleasant while unhealthy behaviours are usually enjoyable or meet immediate needs.

What does the COM-B model state ?

A

The three factors that affect a persons willingness to change their behaviour :

1) motivation
2) capability ( psychological and physical )
3) opportunity ( resources , time , availability )

A
  • based on the idea that 80% of human behaviour is automatic , with people respirating to the cues in the environment that unconsciously shape their choices
