Health Assessment Ch. 30 Flashcards
What is PMI?
Point of Maximum Impulse
Apical Impulse/PMI
Where the apex of the heart touches the anterior chest wall at the 5th intercostal space
Atrophied
A muscle that has reduced in size and feels soft when palpated
What is cerumen?
Ear wax
Clubbing
Bulging of tissue at the nail base
Hypertonicity
When there is resistance with passive movement of a muscle
Hypotonicity
A muscle with little tone. The extremity’s position is determined by gravity
Induration
Skin hard (remember positive TB results induration is measured in millimeters)
Peristalsis
The movement of contents through the intestines
Polyps
Tumor like growth or purulent drainage
Ptosis
Drooping of an eyelid over the pupil (cause by edema of damage to the third cranial nerve)
Stenosis
The narrowing of arteries
Syncope
Circulatory arrest
Turgor
Elasticity of the skin
Systole
The ventricles contract and eject blood from the left ventricle into the aorta and from the right ventricle into the pulmonary artery
Diastole
The ventricles relax, the atria contract to move blood into the ventricles and fill the coronary arteries
When examining the heart have the PT in the ________ or __________ position.
supine
Fowler’s
Heart sound position 1
Aortic - Right second intercostal space
Heart sound position 2
Left second intercostal space
Heart sound position 3
Second Pulmonic/Erb’s Point - Left third intercostal space
Heart sound position 4
Tricuspid - Left fourth intercostal space
Heart sound position 5
Mitral - Left of midclavicular, fifth intercostal space
Regarding pulse strength what is considered normal?
2
Use __________ to palpate?
fingertips
Use these to test for pitting.
thumbs
