What are the skills of physical assessment (IPOAP)
Inspection, palpation, percussion, auscultation, olfaction (IPOAP)
What is inspection
The general inspection, it’s just visual, looking for abnormalities, symmetry etc
What is palpation
The use of hands to touch patients body parts, assessing for tenderness, distention, masses, texture, temperature, and movement
What is percussion
Patient’s body is topped with fingertips to produce vibration
Types of percussion sounds
Flatt (scapula)
Dull (anterior thigh)
Resonant (clavicle)
Tympanic (puffed cheek)
What is auscultation
Listening to sounds with stethoscope
What are the characteristics of sounds
Frequency, loudness, quality, duration
What is olfaction
Odours
Types of odours
Alcohol, urine, body odor, feces, halitosis, sweet/ fruity ketones, musty
Types of positions
Supine (flat on back) Prone (flat on stomach) Semifowler (sitting 45°) Fowler (sitting 90°) Sims (on thé side) Dorsal recumbent (laying on back, knees bent)
Types of postures
Kyphosis = elderly posture (slouched back) Lordosis = pregnant woman posture (leaning back) Scoliosis = s posture

Age and gender, signs of distress, body type, posture, gait, body movements, hygiene and grooming, dress, body odor, affect and mood, speech, signs of abuse, substance abuse (BADASS GPS BSH)
