What are the three components of stress
Stressors (major life stressors positive or negative, daily hassles) Mediating factors (Personality, coping strategy) Stress response (behavioral, psychological, physical)
What are the 3 stages of the general adaptation syndrome? (Hans Seyle 1936)
Alarm - resistance - exhaustion
At each stage, the ability of the body to resist more stressors is influenced. Ultimately, in the exhaustion stage, the person will be more likely to experience adverse health effects.
What system can be impaired by high level of stress?
The immune system
What health problem are associated with stress?
increased blood pressure, cardiac disease, diabetes, declining of sexual interest

What are the difference bw primary and secondary appraisals
Lazarus Richard 1993.
Primary appraisals are used to decide whether stimuli are stressful, benign or irrelevant.
Secondary appraisals are used when we decide a stimuli is stressful and when we need to consider how to cope with the stressor.
According to Folkman and Lazarus what are the 2 general categories of coping strategies?
Emotion focused coping: We try to prevent an emotional response to the stressor.
(numbing the pain)
Problem focused coping: Taking direct step to solve the pb
What other strategies can help people deal with stress in a positive way?
Downward comparison: compare yourself to those who are worse off.
Giving positive meaning to ordinary event.
What is hardiness and what are its component
This is a trait for people who are very capable of adapting to life changes by viewing events constructively.
Commitment, challenge and control.
When family intervention can be most beneficial and when it is not?
When they promote an ill’s person feeling of being in control rather than being under the control of his family.
